In today’s highly partisan political environment, many worry that our country has lost its way and is headed in the wrong direction. Don’t despair. Jon Meacham’s recent book, The Soul of America: the Battle for Our Better Angels, offers hope that these angels will indeed prevail, although the outcome is far from certain. To examine Meacham’s thinking in more detail and consider the assumptions on which he bases his argument, join Andy Hertig for six sessions of discussion in October and early November. For maximum benefit from each class session, please be prepared to read approximately 40 pages of Meacham’s book each week and share your thoughts. As many of you know, Jon Meacham is a Pulitzer Prize winning journalist and popular historian, who recently gave a moving eulogy at President Bush’s funeral. He was the editor of Newsweek in its final days as a print publication and has written popular biographies of George H. W. Bush and Andrew Jackson.
