Ernest Hemingway’s A Farewell to Arms

Ernest Hemingway drew from his own war experiences in World War I when he crafted this remarkable story of an American ambulance driver serving on the Italian front and his love for a beautiful English nurse. The novel is marked by vivid depictions of the horrors of the battlefield but also by the heartrending vicissitudes of a passionate affair of the heart between his protagonists, Frederic and Catherine. This gripping novel captures the harsh realities of war and the pain of lovers caught in its inexorable sweep. In June 1929, Scribner’s Magazine ran a six-part serial version of the novel. The second installment was banned in Boston, the chief of police claiming it “salacious.” The novel went on to sell 100,000 copies in its first 12 months, becoming Hemingway’s first best seller and a landmark of American literature. Our text will be a new paperback edition set to be published January 7, 2025. We will focus on a close reading of several chapters a week, making the assignments manageable.
